Committees & Groups
There are many ways to serve at Shallotte Presbyterian Church. Consider joining a Committee or Group where you can best use your talents. You can learn more about each committee by selecting the + (plus sign) to the right of each section.
Christian Education Committee – Committee Chair, Kitty Green
The purpose of the Christian Education committee is to provide opportunities for all ages to learn more about and grow in our faith. Currently, we are following the PC(USA) Follow Me Curriculum. This curriculum provides material for every age group and virtually every setting. Each Sunday’s sermon sets the stage for small group discussions that explore the practices in greater depth. We also provide additional opportunities to our families and young people during our 2nd Sunday Funday gatherings. We need more people to volunteer to host small groups and to help facilitate these learning opportunities. Currently, we are holding Sunday School meetings at 9:45am for Adults and Children.
Fellowship Committee – Committee Chair, Linda Black
The Fellowship Committee is a group of SPC members who enjoy planning and preparing food for all members and friends of SPC to celebrate certain occasions of the church. This committee is not involved in any decision making or business planning of the church, merely to gather its members to enjoy a meal together, meet its newest members, or join with other churches to celebrate the Lenten season. Each year, the Committee has at least 5 planned events with others popping up occasionally. A subcommittee of Fellowship is the 55+&- Group. Members meet once a month at a restaurant to enjoy a meal with fellow church members.
Finance & Stewardship Committee – Committee Chair, Wayne Rowell
The Finance Committee is selected by the Session and reports to the Session. The finance team is responsible for the management and good stewardship of our church financial resources. The Finance & Stewardship Committee has significant influence on the sustained financial health and growth of church assets. The Finance and Stewardship Committee’s duties include the following: Revenue Projections, Budget Preparation, Budget Review, Emergency Funding, Financial Reporting, and Safeguarding of Church Assets.
Our Finance Committee is a financial “think tank” for our church and is committed to budgeting, monitoring and controlling how church funds are spent in accordance with the church’s mission. The Finance Committee also oversees the Shallotte Presbyterian Scholarship Fund which awards scholarships each year to qualified students seeking financial help to attend college.
Missions And Benevolences Committee – Committee Chair, Mike Claxton
The Missions and Benevolences Committee meets to determine how to distribute church funds budgeted to them to support missions on a local, state and international level.
Locally, we currently support the Lords Food Pantry, South Brunswick Interchurch Council (SBIC), Brunswick Family Assistance (BFA), Crop Walk, Community Counseling Center, First Tee, Community in Schools (Union Elementary and Shallotte Middle School) Brunswick Christian Recovery Center, The Rose House (a women’s recovery program through Brunswick Christian Recovery Center), SECU Family House (hospice house located in Supply), American Red Cross Bloodmobile and Brunswick County Streetreach.
At the state level we support Children’s Hope Alliance, Matthew 25 Center which is a program in Tabor City that focuses on helping families that travel long distances to visit incarcerated loved ones in prison by providing them a safe place to stay overnight, Habitat for Humanity which builds homes in Brunswick County, and Monroe Camp and Retreat Center.
Internationally, we are supporting Missionary Partners Rev. Cathy Chang and Rev. Juan Lopez and their mission work in the Philippines. Learn more about them at: Revs. Cathy Chang and Juan Lopez.
Nominating Committee – Committee Chair, Barbara Montague
The 2023 Nominating Committee finds and presents a slate of officers to serve as elders and deacons for the upcoming classes.
Personnel Committee – Committee Chair, Susan Alley
The Personnel committee is responsible for ensuring church positions are staffed and supported. In addition, performance evaluations are completed annually in the final quarter of the year. When needed, positions are advertised, candidates are interviewed by the committee and hired with session approval.
Property and Grounds – Committee Chair, Jimmy Durham
The overall mission of the Property and Grounds Committee is “managing the church facilities.” On a different scale we deal with many of the same responsibilities people do at their own home.
Those include:
- Maintenance and Repairs of the Buildings and Grounds
- Manage annual inspections of the fire protection system, elevator, and fire marshal reviews.
- Monitor and Negotiate Annual Contracts with vendors/contractors
- Negotiate Property, General Liability, and Workers’ Compensation Insurance
- Plan and Implement additions and changes to the Building and Grounds
SPC Golf Tournament Committee – Committee Chair, Wayne Tillman
The Shallotte Presbyterian Charity Golf Tournament is held annually in June. All monies raised from this tournament are distributed to local charities. Committee members usually meet February – July. Committee members are involved with planning and assisting in running the tournament, soliciting donations and sponsors and making decisions on who will receive the distribution of funds from the tournament proceeds.
Worship Committee – Committee Chair, Sarah Henry
The Worship Committee is comprised of several sub-committees who oversee specific aspects of our worship programs.
Beach Committee, chaired by Wayne Rowell. This committee provides the community with services on Sundays Memorial Day through Labor Day, also, on Easter and Thanksgiving. Members transport the cross and lectern, along with sound equipment out to the Driftwood access. They direct traffic and assist visitors with parking. We are excited to learn attendees will again enjoy coffee, juice, and donuts. Wayne would love to have some help with parking, set-up, and take-down. And I am sure the folks that will be serving refreshments could also use assistance.
Chancel Committee, chaired by Carol Kauffman, is responsible for changing the paraments to reflect the liturgical calendar. Members keep the candles and wand filled, as well as filling and displaying the Resurrection candle at appropriate times. They assemble the Advent wreath, attend to the Baptismal font and pitcher, and prepare the elements for Communion.
Wedding Coordinator – Sarah Braddock meets with families to plan weddings based on our wedding guidelines and procedures. Further information about weddings at SPC can be found here: Wedding Policy
Funeral Coordinator – Elizabeth Lewis works to ensure families feel welcomed as they celebrate the lives of their loved ones. Elizabeth procures the help of members to assist guests that attend funerals at SPC. More information can be found here: Funeral Guidelines
Mary Martha Committee - Members of the Mary Martha Committee help with planning receptions in our Fellowship Hall for the family following the funeral service. They setup, plan and prepare the refreshments, and clean up afterwards.
Flower Committee – Sarah Braddock heads this committee. She orders poinsettias at Christmas and Easter lilies or Gerber daisies to beautify the sanctuary during these special seasons. Members donate funds to purchase these flowers in honor or memory of a loved one. Sarah can always use some extra help in arranging these flowers in the sanctuary and keeping them watered.
